Richard Shindell, the New York singer-songwriter and acoustic guitarist, plays The Greystones in Sheffield.
Richard Shindell plays The Greystones on Tuesday 17 November, one of a limited number of dates he's playing as he returns to the road. He's a New York expatriate who now divides his time between Buenos Aires and the Hudson Valley, living as both immigrant and emigrant.
He's a meticulous craftsman of song who took up the guitar at eight, spent nine months in a Zen Buddhist community in upstate New York, and busked in the Paris Metro, where he discovered his love for acoustics. He later attended Union Theological Seminary, where a chapel composition, 'On a Sea of Fleur de Lis', became his first 'keeper' song. His eight studio albums and two live recordings range from lighthearted ballads and adulterous love songs to dirges and diatribes that skewer politics, prejudice, war and religion, and his songs have been covered by Joan Baez.
His latest record, Careless, took over three years to record across New York and Buenos Aires, and Shindell has said the wider sonic range of the electric guitar was a real inspiration for it. He spent the pandemic on the Pampa reading, writing and gardening, and this is one of the few performances he's playing since coming back to the stage.
