Richard Ayoade: Afterthoughts

Richard Ayoade is coming to Sheffield City Hall Oval Hall on Sunday 18 October, for a talk based on his latest book, Afterthoughts, or Some Pistachios Won't Open: Wisdom for the Unreflective. It's a live evening around the book rather than a stand-up set, so the focus is on the writing and the ideas behind it.

Most of us know Ayoade from the screen. He's a BAFTA-winning actor, comedian, director and writer, and his career covers a lot of ground. He played the photographer in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers — the one who delivers the line 'Please, Mer Sellers, can I get a shot of you and your mum?' — and he was a series regular on The IT Crowd. He's stepped behind the camera too, directing the acclaimed films Submarine and The Double, and he's spent a fair bit of time hosting Travel Man and The Crystal Maze. There's also the voice work: he lent his nasal tone to The Boxtrolls, Early Man, Soul and The Bad Guys.

This night is a bit different from those roles. It's a talk in which he shares insights from Afterthoughts, and the full title — Afterthoughts, or Some Pistachios Won't Open: Wisdom for the Unreflective — gives you a good sense of the tone he's working with. If you've read the book, it's a chance to hear him talk through it; if you haven't, it's a way into it.

It's at Sheffield City Hall Oval Hall on Sunday 18 October, starting at 19:30.
