Turntablist set by Reel Steel and Zaron mixing vinyl film scores and VHS cinema, followed by an immersive live audio-visual set from Sculpture.
Reel Steel and Zaron are playing the Drama Studio on Saturday 24 October, with Sculpture joining them for the second half of the night. It's a double bill that keeps the analogue gear front and centre, with turntables and tapes running the whole way through.
Reel Steel and Zaron open the evening by mixing vinyl film scores and VHS cinema, both brought live to the big screen. The two work together to scratch and blend soundtracks from the cinema, with the corresponding footage playing out in front of you. It's a set built on the physical: vinyl records on the decks and VHS tapes in the players, with the audio and visuals locked together in real time.
Sculpture takes over from there with an immersive live audio-visual set. The sound is built from a sampler and tape loops, and the visuals come from a zoetrope — a pre-cinema device that creates the illusion of motion when spun. It's a similar approach to the first half, with the music and the image generated from the same physical sources, though the mood shifts from the cinematic to something more textural and looping.

The Drama Studio is an intimate 177-seat theatre owned by the University of Sheffield, housed in the former Glossop Road Baptist Church. It opened in 1970 and still keeps many of its original architectural features; it's a Grade II listed building, listed in 1995, and it still offers three rehearsal spaces to hire. The venue stages regular productions by students and local drama groups, including foreign-language shows, mainly in French and Spanish, throughout the year. The night sits among the Broomhill neighbourhood events in Sheffield. Entry is free.
