Free evening of theatre, music and readings in which young people revive the story of the Maccabi Players to explore Sheffield's Jewish heritage.
Re-Playing Heritage: Theatre and Remembrance comes to Sheffield Library Theatre on Sunday 15 November, from 6 pm to 8 pm. It's an evening that looks at Sheffield's Jewish heritage, with young people reviving the story of the Maccabi Players through theatre, music and readings. The whole thing is put on by Public Engagement at The University of Sheffield.
The evening draws on Dr Carmen Levick's research into the history of the city's Jewish community and on the legacy of the Maccabi Players, a well-known post-war community theatre group. That's the thread that runs through the night: the story of a group that once brought theatre to the community, now brought back to the stage by a new generation. It's not just one thing, either. The session combines an exhibition, music and rehearsed readings, so you'll see the history on the walls as well as hear it performed.
Because it's a mix of theatre, music and an exhibition, there's a bit of something for different ways of taking it in. The readings and the music are the live part of the night, and the exhibition lets you linger on the details at your own pace. It's a way of honouring that cultural history by actually doing it again, rather than just talking about it.
