Rattus, Stranglers obsessives, play the band's music with Hollow Dawn as support at Sidney and Matilda.
Rattus are playing the music of The Stranglers at Sidney And Matilda on Saturday 14 November, from 7:30 to 10:30 PM. It's a tribute night, so the whole set is built around The Stranglers' songs rather than original material.
They describe themselves as Stranglers obsessives who play the band's music with passion, aggression and conviction. That's a good way to frame it: they aren't just running through the hits, they're leaning into the harder edge that the original band was known for. The line-up is set up as a classic Stranglers formation — bass, keys, guitar and drums — and each player brings more than 20 years of professional session and live experience to the table. If you've spent any time with the original records, you'll know that the bass and the keys are just as much a part of the sound as the guitar, so having that full line-up on stage is what makes this work.
Opening the night is Hollow Dawn, whose goth-influenced sound draws on The Mission, Sisters of Mercy and Depeche Mode. It's a fitting pairing: the dark, atmospheric textures of the support act lead into the more aggressive, driving energy of the main set, and both sit in that same post-punk territory. If you're into the moodier side of the scene, it's a double bill that makes sense.
