Free public surgery run by the South Yorkshire Portable Antiquities Scheme to identify and record archaeological finds brought by visitors.
Kelham Island Museum is hosting a PAS Finds Surgery on Thursday 5 November, run by the South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire Portable Antiquities Scheme. It's a day for anyone who's found something in the ground and isn't quite sure what it is.
The way it works is straightforward: you book a 15-minute timed slot and bring your finds along to be identified and recorded. The experts on hand will take a look at what you've brought in, work out what it is, and get it properly logged. If they need more time to study it, they'll borrow the object for three months before returning it to you. In the meantime, the find is recorded on the national PAS database at www.finds.org.uk, so it's preserved as part of the archaeological record regardless of whether it ends up in a museum or back on your shelf.

It's a good chance to get a professional opinion on things you might have dug up in your own garden or picked up while out walking. Whether it's a fragment of pottery, a piece of metalwork, or something you can't place at all, the surgery is there to help you make sense of it. Entry is free, and you'll need to book one of the 15-minute slots in advance to secure your time with the team. The museum is at Alma Street, Sheffield S3 8SA.
