Author talk by Colin Grant about his book on the voices of migration to Britain, part of the Off the Shelf Festival of Words.
Colin Grant is at the Millennium Gallery on Friday 23 October, talking about his book What We Leave We Carry: Voices of Migration to Britain. It's part of Off the Shelf: Festival of Words, the University of Sheffield's festival of ideas, so it's one of a whole run of talks and events across the city rather than a one-off. If you've been following the festival, you'll know it's usually a good mix of writers, thinkers and speakers coming to Sheffield for a few weeks, and this is one of the sessions.
The book itself is built around the voices of people who've migrated to Britain, and that's what Grant will be talking through. The title What We Leave We Carry gives you a fair idea of the ground he's covering — the things people bring with them when they move, and the things they leave behind. It's a subject that hits close to home for a lot of people, and hearing it told through first-hand accounts is a different thing from reading the headlines. If you're interested in migration, identity or just the stories that shape how we live here, this is the one to keep an eye on.
Because it's part of Off the Shelf, it's not just a book reading. The festival is run by the University of Sheffield, and the whole thing is designed around ideas and conversation, so you can expect a talk that opens things up rather than just a summary of the chapters. It's the kind of evening that works best if you're in the mood to listen and think for a bit.
