A talk by Ross Cameron on the health and well-being benefits of plants, part of the Off the Shelf: Festival of Words series.
Ross Cameron is speaking at the Millennium Gallery on Tuesday 20 October, as part of Off the Shelf: Festival of Words, which the gallery runs with the University of Sheffield. The talk is called Plants Can Save Your Life, and it sits right in the middle of Cameron's life's work.
Cameron is Professor of Environmental Horticulture at the University of Sheffield's School of Architecture and Landscape, and an advisor to the Royal Horticultural Society. He's written a book in collaboration with the RHS, newly revised, that sets out 50 ideas for planting and growing that can benefit our health. That's the core of what he'll be talking about: the practical ways plants can make a difference to how we feel.
It's not just about the personal side of things, either. His research looks at how plants affect health and well-being, and also at their wider services — things like flood management, thermal regulation, noise abatement and improved air quality. He's published more than 100 academic papers and book chapters on landscape plants and urban green spaces, so he's coming at this from a place of deep, documented evidence rather than just a general love of gardening.

If you're already planning to be at the gallery, there's plenty to see around the talk. The Millennium Gallery houses the Sykes Gallery Metalwork Collection, one of the finest in the world, with over 800 examples of the cutlery, flatware and tableware that made Sheffield famous, alongside the city's Ruskin Collection. The session runs from 12:30pm to 1:30pm on Tuesday 20 October, tickets are £12 or £10, and it's held at the Millennium Gallery on Arundel Gate, S1 2PP.
