Author talk with Japanese writer Nao-Cola Yamazaki in conversation with Dr Nozomi Uematsu, with a Japanese translator, at the Millennium Gallery.
Nao-Cola Yamazaki is coming to the Millennium Gallery on Saturday 24 October, for a talk as part of Off the Shelf: Festival of Words from the University of Sheffield. They'll be in conversation with Dr Nozomi Uematsu, a Lecturer in Japanese Studies at the university, and there will be a Japanese language translator present throughout.
Yamazaki is a prize-winning Japanese author known for frank, contemporary depictions of daily life, love and relationships. They write under a pen name chosen out of a love of Diet Coke. Their debut novella, Don't Laugh at Other People's Sex Lives (2004), won the Bungei Prize and was adapted into a major film, selling over 250,000 copies in Japan. Since then, they've won the Shimase Award for Love Stories and have been nominated multiple times for the Akutagawa Prize, with more than a dozen novels and essay collections translated into English by Words Without Borders and Asymptote.
Uematsu has described Don't Laugh at Other People's Sex Lives as centring on a strange, beguiling love affair, and that's the book the session will be built around. The talk is presented in partnership with the Japan Foundation. If you're arriving early or staying late, the Millennium Gallery also houses the Sykes Gallery Metalwork Collection, one of the finest in the world, and the Guild of St George's Ruskin Collection.
