Roustabout Theatre's family tour adaptation of David McKee's picture book, with physical comedy, mime and a live score, suitable for children aged 3 and over.
Roustabout Theatre are bringing Not Now, Bernard to the Montgomery Theatre on Tuesday 16 and Wednesday 17 February 2027, with shows at 2pm and 4pm both days. It's an adaptation of David McKee's 1980 picture book, directed by Toby Hulse, and it's part of a UK tour aimed at small children and families.
If the name doesn't ring a bell, McKee is the same author who created the Elmer books. The story follows Bernard, who finds a monster in his back garden and befriends it while his parents are too busy to notice. It's a simple starting point that opens up to themes of children feeling ignored and the importance of genuine communication. Hulse calls it 'an absolute classic picture book, by a true master of the form'.
Rather than just reading the story, the production leans on physical comedy, mime and a live score played on instruments and household objects to bring McKee's colour-drenched illustrations to life. Makaton signing runs through the show, led by Makaton Tutor Becca Hulbert from Arthur's Club, and relaxed performances are offered so it's suitable for everyone aged three and over. It's a run built for families, with the afternoon slots making it easy to fit in around the school run.
