Contemporary Icelandic music by Björk, Ólafur Arnalds, Hildur Guðnadóttir and Anna Thorvaldsdóttir played by The Phaedra Ensemble.
The Phaedra Ensemble open Music in the Round's Northern Lights weekend at the Crucible Theatre on Friday 27 November, with a concert of contemporary Icelandic music. It's the first of a three-day weekend that runs from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 November, and the whole evening is built around a single theme: the sound of modern Iceland.
The programme pulls from several different corners of the country's music scene. There are the glacial works of Anna Thorvaldsdóttir, known for their slow, shifting textures, alongside the writing of Oscar-winning composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. Those two sit together with new arrangements of music by Björk and Ólafur Arnalds, both written for the TV series Broadchurch and brought here in a different form. It's a broad sweep of the island's output, from the more atmospheric, orchestral side to the songs and scores that have reached a wider audience.
The staging is designed to mirror that landscape: distant plains, shimmering permafrost, flickering flames and the chill of the tundra. It's a portrait of the frozen north as much as a concert, with the music and the room working together to evoke the same cold, open spaces.
