Relaunch of the Sheffield clubbing institution Niche, with live sets from Nev Wright and Bassboy and a year-round platform of events.
Niche is back on Saturday 17 October at Network Sheffield, 14-16 Matilda Street. For anyone who knows Sheffield's clubbing history, the name carries a fair bit of weight: it started in the early 1990s at a club on Sidney Street and became one of the city's longest-running institutions, sitting at the heart of its musical heritage for over 30 years. It grew to be synonymous with bassline — that heavy, low-end sound that defined a whole era of the city's dance floors — and earned a reputation as more than just a club night, more of a movement.
This relaunch is led by a new local ownership team of DJs, promoters and event producers, with host Forca — a Sheffield MC and DJ known for his work with Wub Club — at the front. They're pitching it as more than a one-off night, too. The plan is to build it into a year-round platform, with regular events, a record label to support underground producers, live sessions, branded merchandise and digital content. The night itself runs across two main stages, so there's plenty to move between.
The line-up is a long one. Michelle Platinum is on, alongside live sets from Bassboy and Kaylee, and DJ EJ with a live PA from Zoe. Nev Wright and Dom Brown go back-to-back, and JTJ, Wardy and JYB are in the mix. Thorpey also plays live, and Forca hosts the whole thing. It's a broad spread of names, with the live PAs and back-to-back sets keeping it from feeling like a standard DJ rotation.
