Late-night dance party where Charlie Dark MBE plays house, jazz, funk, disco and Afrobeat from his own record collection.
Charlie Dark MBE is back in Sheffield on Saturday 14 November, playing a three-hour set at The System in Neepsend. The night is presented by Love To Dance and Milestones, and the whole thing is built around one simple thing: Charlie Dark taking over the decks and playing through his own record collection.
If you're not familiar with the name, Dark is a long-standing figure in the UK dance scene, and the MBE after his name gives you a fair idea of the scale of his contribution. This isn't a guest spot or a short set; he's taking the floor for the full three hours, and the music comes straight from his own crates. That's the draw here — it's a night of a seasoned DJ digging into his own collection rather than playing a pre-planned set.
As for what that collection actually holds, it's a broad one. He'll be working his way across house, jazz, funk, disco and Afrobeat, so the night will move through a few different moods. House and disco provide the dancefloor weight, jazz and funk bring the groove, and Afrobeat adds that rhythmic, polyphonic edge. It's a wide spread, but it's all coming from the same record bag, so there's a common thread running through it.

The System is at 6-8 Botsford Street in Neepsend, S3 9PF. The music runs from 21:00 until 03:00, so it's a late one that takes you right through to the early hours. If you're into house and the wider dance world, it's a good chance to hear a proper selector work through his records over a full night.
