Art class taught by Ula of Floating Art where participants paint with Sumi ink, Gansai Tambi and gold leaf on rice paper or silk fans.
Ula is running a traditional Japanese painting class in Sheffield on Saturday 24 October, and it's a proper dive into the materials rather than just a quick sketch. You'll be working with Sumi ink, Gansai Tambi traditional Japanese colours, and gold leaf, painting onto rice paper boards, rice paper fans, or silk fans. Before you pick up a brush, she'll introduce you to Japanese art movements like Ukiyo-e and Rinpa, so you've got a bit of context for the style you're working in.
Ula is a local artist with a bachelor's in fine art and a master's in visual art, and more than 15 years of teaching experience behind her. She runs Floating Art, a studio built on the idea that everyone can be an artist, and her practice focuses on exploring different cultures and developing ideas through conversation with your inner self. That's the spirit she brings to the session, too — it's as much about the process as the finished piece.
