Beginner-friendly workshop on traditional and contemporary Japanese painting techniques, with sumi ink, gold leaf and rice paper, led by Floating Art.
Floating Art are running a traditional Japanese painting workshop at KUMO BAR in the Cambridge Street Collective on Monday 26 October. It's a two-and-a-half-hour session, and it's set up for beginners, so you don't need any prior experience to get involved. All the materials are provided on the day: sumi ink, Gansai Tambi traditional Japanese colours, gold leaf, and your choice of a rice paper board or a fan to work on.
Over the course of the session, you'll be introduced to both traditional and contemporary Japanese painting techniques, working with bamboo brushes. There's also a bit of context woven in, with a look at Japanese art movements like Ukiyo-e and Rinpa, so you get a sense of where the styles come from while you're actually painting. You'll walk away with a tote bag as part of the deal.
The class is led by Ula, a local artist with a bachelor's in fine art, a master's in visual art, and more than 15 years of teaching experience. She runs workshops across a range of cultures and art movements and describes her approach with the belief that everyone can be an artist. Floating Art also offers private workshops, which run smaller, with 12 to 30 people compared to up to 40 for the public sessions.
