Two-and-a-half-hour class taught by Ula of Floating Art to paint with Sumi ink, Gansai Tambi and gold leaf on rice paper or silk fans.
Ula is running a traditional Japanese painting workshop in Sheffield on Friday 23 October. It's a two-and-a-half-hour session, and you'll spend it working with the same materials used in the art form itself: Sumi ink, Gansai Tambi traditional Japanese colours, and gold leaf. You can choose what to paint on — rice paper boards, rice paper fans, or silk fans — so you'll leave with something you've actually made.
Before you get stuck in, Ula introduces the Japanese art movements that underpin the style, including Ukiyo-e and Rinpa. It's not just about the technique, then; you'll get a sense of the history and the traditions that shape the work. From there, you'll spend the rest of the session applying those materials to your chosen surface.
Ula runs Floating Art, a studio built on the belief that everyone can be an artist. She's a local artist with a bachelor's degree in fine art and a master's in visual art, and more than 15 years of teaching experience. Her practice focuses on exploring different cultures and developing ideas through conversation with one's inner self, which fits the slow, focused nature of this kind of painting.
