Beginner-friendly two-and-a-half-hour public class in traditional Japanese painting techniques with artist Ula of Floating Art.
Ula is running a traditional Japanese painting class at KUMO BAR in the Cambridge Street Collective on Tuesday 20 October. It's a two-and-a-half-hour session, and you don't need any prior experience to join in — it's open to beginners, so you can turn up without having ever picked up a brush.
During the class, you'll work with both traditional and contemporary Japanese painting techniques using bamboo brushes. Ula also introduces a bit of the history behind the work, touching on Japanese art movements like Ukiyo-e and Rinpa. You'll paint on rice paper boards, rice paper fans or silk fans, and you take your finished piece home with you. All the materials are provided on the day: sumi ink, Gansai Tambi traditional Japanese colours, gold leaf, and the rice paper board or fan you'll be working on.
Ula is a local artist with a bachelor's degree in fine art and a master's in visual art, and she's been teaching for over 15 years. Her studio, Floating Art, is dedicated to opening up the world of art to more people, which fits the beginner-friendly nature of the session. Public classes run with up to 40 people, while private workshops take between 12 and 30.
