Festive workshop led by Kim Searle to make scented soy wax candles in apothecary jars, jam jars and vintage teacups.
Kelham Island Museum is hosting a candle-making workshop on Sunday 13 December, part of their Kelham Makes series. It's led by Kim Searle of Darn It! Workshops, and you'll be making your own scented candles using all-natural soy wax. The session is pitched as a festive one to share with someone special or to make a unique present, and you'll leave with at least two candles.
There's a fair bit of creating to do during the session. You'll blend your own bespoke scents and essential oils before pouring them into one-off vessels—the examples given are apothecary jars, jam jars and vintage teacups. The soy wax is all-natural, so it's a cleaner burn than the paraffin you'll find in most supermarket candles.
Kim Searle runs Darn It! Workshops across the country, delivering creative sessions in festivals, galleries and community spaces with a focus on sustainability and well-being. She also co-runs Thread Republic, a textile reuse hub in Huddersfield. The workshop takes place at Kelham Island Museum on Alma Street, a site that celebrates 300 years of Sheffield making history. It takes you back through the Industrial Revolution and the Victorian era to the city's steel and innovation heritage, with the 425-ton, 12,000hp River Don Engine, the Hawley Tool Collection and the Sheffield Simplex cars among its highlights.
