Spoken word artist Joshua Idehen, of 'Mum Does The Washing', plays Electric Studios with special guest KURT.
Joshua Idehen plays Electric Studios on Saturday 14 November, with special guest KURT. The night is presented by FORM.
Idehen is a British-born Nigerian spoken word artist whose career took off with the viral success of 'Mum Does The Washing', a poem that started as a Twitter thread and was set to the beats of his creative partner, the musician Ludvig Parment. The two went on to release an album, I Know You're Hurting, Everyone Is Hurting, Everyone Is Trying, You Have Got To Try, on 6 March 2026. The song has drawn support from Jamz Supernova and Huw Stephens, and has taken them to sold-out shows and packed festival stages, including Glastonbury and Green Man, as well as an appearance on Later... with Jools and a support slot on Baxter Dury's European tour.
For Idehen, this new era follows around two decades of writing poetry. He'd previously been more interested in film and, by his own account, actively disliked poetry while studying at Hackney Community College and working in a West End bar, until Dizzee Rascal's 'Vexed' struck a chord. That shift in perspective eventually led him back to the written word, and it's that intersection of poetry and music that sits at the heart of his work.
