Live sitar concert by Jasdeep Singh Degun with Shahbaz Hussain on tabla at Firth Hall.
Jasdeep Singh Degun plays Firth Hall on Thursday 3 December, with Shahbaz Hussain on tabla. It's a sitar-led evening, and if you're not familiar with the name, he's a Leeds-born sitar virtuoso, composer, arranger and improviser. He's been working across a few different worlds since he started out, and this is a chance to hear him live in Sheffield.
His debut album, Anomaly, came out in 2022 on Peter Gabriel's Real World Records. From there he went on a string of UK tours, playing Kings Place, Westminster Abbey, the WOMAD Festival, Nottingham's Royal Hall, the Southbank Centre and the Darbar Festival at the Barbican, which was broadcast on Sky Arts. He spent 2022 as Opera North's Artist-in-Residence, where he composed and conducted the award-winning opera Orpheus.
There's a fair bit of recognition behind the playing, too. He's picked up the Songlines Best Newcomer Award and an Asian Achievers Award, and in 2024 he became the first sitar player and first British-Asian musician to win the Royal Philharmonic Society's Instrumentalist award. On the night, he'll be joined by Shahbaz Hussain on tabla, so it's the sitar and tabla pairing you'll be hearing.
