Free continuing display at Weston Park Museum, a thatched reconstruction of an Iron Age roundhouse dwelling with artefacts and information.
The Iron Age Roundhouse is a continuing display inside Weston Park Museum, tucked away in the 'Beneath Your Feet' gallery. It's a full-scale reconstruction of a thatched, windowless dwelling from the Bronze and Iron Ages, the kind of home people shared with their extended families back then. The doorway usually faces south-east or east to catch the morning sun, and inside there's a replica camp fire that invites you to gather around and hear stories. Display cases both inside and out hold artefacts and information sheets, so you can get a proper sense of how people lived in these houses.
Weston Park Museum itself has been on Western Bank since 1875, telling the stories of Sheffield and its people from prehistory to the present day. The roundhouse sits alongside a rotating programme of exhibitions, but it's one of the museum's long-term fixtures. If you're in the building, you'll also find some of the visitor favourites in the natural science showcase, like Spike the Woolly Rhino and Snowy the Polar Bear. There's a café on site called Ambulo for when you've had your fill of the galleries.
