Introductory workshop on pranayama, the breath and energy practices of yoga, with asanas and kriyas to prepare the body.
Emma Rattenbury is leading an introduction to pranayama at the Sheffield Iyengar Yoga Centre on Saturday 14 November, starting at 10:45 am. If you've ever heard the term and wondered what it actually means, this is a good place to start. Pranayama is the fourth limb of yoga, and it's all about the breath.
The session doesn't just dive straight into the breathing. It begins with asanas — yoga postures — chosen specifically to open the body and prepare it to receive the breath. The idea is that you work the physical side first, clearing the way so the pranayama can land properly. From there, the workshop moves into the breathwork itself, and it also includes some kriyas — introductory breath and energy practices that sit alongside the pranayama.
Because it's an introduction, it's built for people who are new to this part of the practice. You'll get a feel for how the breath is used as a tool, and you'll see how the physical preparation and the breathing techniques fit together. It's a morning spent working through the sequence rather than just listening to a talk about it.
