Five-hour printmaking workshop with tutor Ellen Burroughs to create fine-line intaglio prints on zinc using non-toxic methods.
Carousel Print Studio is running an Intaglio Etching with Copper Sulphate workshop on Saturday 30 January 2027, from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm. It's a five-hour session led by tutor Ellen Burroughs, and it's all about a safer, less toxic way of doing intaglio printmaking.
Intaglio is a process that goes back to the 16th century, and the traditional way of doing it involves acids that can be pretty harsh to work with. This workshop swaps those out for modern, non-toxic methods, so you get the same results without the fumes. You'll learn how to prepare, treat and work zinc to produce fine, detailed line-work prints, and you'll leave with your own series of prints and a reusable etching plate to keep going with at home.
To get the wheels turning, the session draws on artists like Goya, Paula Rego, David Hockney, Sol LeWitt and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, so there's plenty of different styles to look at while you're working. All the materials and equipment are provided, along with aprons and teas and coffees, so you just need to turn up.
