South London six-piece Gently Tender play Sidney and Matilda on Sidney Street on their UK and Ireland headline tour.
Gently Tender play Sidney & Matilda on Wednesday 4 November, part of their UK and Ireland headline tour. They're a South London six-piece who grew out of the ashes of Palma Violets, with Sam Fryer, Pete Mayhew and Will Doyle joined by Francesca Brierley, Adam Brown and Evie Hilyer-Ziegler. Frontman and songwriter Sam Fryer describes their sound as inspired by the British countryside, blending folk, punk and soul with lush harmonies and pastoral melodies.
They're touring their second album, This Was Once Fields, released on TODO Records. Fryer says the songs came from his walks through North London's green belt, and the title points to that same landscape. It follows their critically acclaimed debut, Take Hold Of Your Promise!, which Matthew E White produced in 2022. Between the two, you can hear the band moving from the folk-inflected start towards the more pastoral, open-air feel of the new record.
With six people on stage, there's plenty of room for those harmonies to sit at the front of the mix, and the set will draw from both albums. The Sheffield date is one stop on a run that takes them across the UK and Ireland, so they'll be playing the same set they're taking to the rest of the tour.
