Two solo exhibitions: ceramic sculptures by Antonia Salmon and paintings by David Lucas exploring the natural world.
Antonia Salmon and David Lucas are showing together at Cupola Gallery from 17 October to 14 November, with an opening evening on Friday 16 October from 7 to 9pm. It's a double exhibition, so you'll find two solo shows running side by side in the same space, both looking at the natural world from very different angles.
David Lucas is a Yorkshire-born artist now based between Sheffield and North Cumbria, and The Solway Series brings him back to the landscapes of the Solway Firth. The work grows out of his Shaft of Light series and draws on astrophysics, philosophy, and the natural world. He works primarily in oils on canvas, balancing structural control with the potential for accident to distil how a landscape is perceived and remembered.
Antonia Salmon's From Out of Silence gathers ceramic sculptures that translate the rhythms, vibrations, and textures of the Peak District into form. She works through what she calls 'somatic listening' — listening with the whole body rather than only with the ears. The gallery's director, Karen Sherwood, describes the results as meditative, with smooth surfaces and flowing lines.

Between the two, you get a contrast in both medium and approach: Lucas's oils on canvas and Salmon's ceramics, one looking at the Solway Firth and the other at the Peak District. Both are award-winning artists, and the exhibition runs from 17 October to 14 November at Cupola Gallery, 178-178a Middlewood Road, Hillsborough, Sheffield S6 1TD, with the opening evening on Friday 16 October from 7 to 9pm.
