Half-day guided foraging walk for beginners and intermediates, identifying common UK wild plants, with wild-food samples.
The Forager Within is running a half-day foraging course at Fox Hagg Nature Reserve on Monday 26 October, starting at 10:00. It's aimed at beginners and intermediates, so you don't need to know your way around a hedgerow to get anything out of it.
The walk covers around 1.5 miles and identifies some 15 common UK species. Along the way, you'll get the basics on foraging laws and safety, and there are wild-food samples to try. It's a slow-paced morning rather than a hike, and the focus is as much on the plants as it is on the act of gathering.
The course is run by James Hill, who started The Forager Within after his own interest in foraging grew from childhood nature walks with his parents. It became a hobby by spring 2016, then an obsession, and by 2022 a business with a mission to connect people to nature and improve their physical and mental health. He frames foraging as a way to reconnect with ancestral roots and disconnect from modern life, noting that humans foraged to survive for hundreds of thousands of years before farming — for over 95 per cent of our existence as a species.
