Beginner linocut printmaking workshop at Carousel Print Studio to learn the basics and create your own prints.
Carousel Print Studio is running a beginner's linocut workshop on Saturday 23 January 2027, from 10am to 1pm. It's a three-hour session held at their studio in Exchange Place Studios, on Exchange Street in Sheffield city centre. The whole point is to get you started with the basics of linocut printmaking, and by the end of the morning you'll have made your own bold prints to take home.
If you've never touched a linocut tool before, that's exactly who this is for. You'll learn how to carve a design into a linoleum block, ink it up, and print it. It's a straightforward process that doesn't require any prior experience, so it works as well for a total beginner as it does for someone who's tried it once or twice and wants to get a proper handle on the technique. The focus is on the fundamentals: how to carve safely, how to get the ink just right, and how to pull a clean print.
It's worth knowing a bit about where this is happening. Carousel Print Studio is a not-for-profit registered charity that specialises in printmaking and creative workshops. They describe themselves as a welcoming, inclusive space for beginners and artists to learn, collaborate, network and develop. They're based on the ground floor of Exchange Place Studios in Castlegate, in partnership with Yorkshire Artspace, and they run a whole range of courses and facilities beyond linocut, including screen printing, mono printing, safe etching, woodcut and cyanotype. So if you find you've got the bug, there's plenty more to explore in the same building.
