Saima Mir discusses her award-winning crime thriller 'Deliverance' in conversation with Beth Perry, part of the Off the Shelf Festival of Words.
Saima Mir is in conversation with Beth Perry at the University of Sheffield Drama Studio on Thursday 15 October, starting at 6:00 pm. It's part of the Off the Shelf Festival of Words, and the focus is Deliverance, the conclusion to Mir's award-winning crime thriller trilogy.
If you're not familiar with the series, it's set in the Pakistani underworld of Bradford and follows Jia Khan, a London barrister estranged from her Northern roots who builds a global criminal empire. The books challenge stereotypes around race and gender, and the whole run has been described as a love story to the region. Deliverance was a Times Best Crime Novel, and The Times called it 'a gripping tale of weak men, strong women and Yorkshire grit'.
Mir herself has a background that fits the crime beat: she's an award-winning journalist and bestselling author who's written for The Guardian, The Times, The Independent and The Daily Telegraph, and worked for the BBC. She grew up in Bradford and lives in London now. She also edited The Book of Bradford, a collection of stories about Yorkshire's third-biggest city.

The evening sits within the 'Writing the City' strand of the festival, which is curated by Professor Beth Perry, Director of the Urban Institute at the University of Sheffield. That's who Mir will be talking to on the night, so it's a conversation rather than a reading. Tickets are £12 standard and £10 for concessions, and it kicks off at 6:00 pm at the Drama Studio.
