Free talk by a livestock farmer on herbal leys and agroforestry as climate-resilience strategies on intensive grassland farms, with a guided farm tour.
Climate Resilience on Intensive Grassland Farms runs at Thorpe Farm Bunkhouses on Wednesday 21 October, starting at 10:30. It's a talk led by a livestock farmer working an intensive grassland system, who puts forward herbal leys and agroforestry as adaptive strategies against climate change. The session stays on practical ground, including the difference between direct-drilling and full seedbed cultivation for herbal leys, and is hosted with the kind permission of the Marsden family.
Thorpe Farm was until recently a 120-cow dairy farm and still makes and retails its own ice cream, with a micro-dairy tour on offer over lunchtime. The farm sits on free-draining silt loam over shale and carries out a range of actions under the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI). A guided farm tour rounds off the morning, and the Met Office, the Forestry Commission, Catchment Sensitive Farming and the Peak District National Park Authority are also involved.
