Monthly night of contemporary classical music and experimental improvisation at The Beaten Track in Sheffield.
Classical Music at The Beaten Track returns to The Beaten Track on Monday 2 November, part of the Hidden Track series. It's a monthly night dedicated to contemporary classical music in the heart of Sheffield, held downstairs at The Beaten Track, the city's old Wig and Pen. The evening runs in two halves: the first consists of programmed performances, and the second is an experimental group improvisation, with a short break in between. The room is open to performers, composers and appreciators of all kinds.
That second half is where the night opens up. While the first part is a set of planned pieces, the second is a collective improvisation, and the invitation extends to anyone in the room who wants to get involved. If you're a musician or a composer, you can join in; if you're just there to listen, that works too. It's a session that puts the making of the music on the same level as hearing it, and the break in the middle gives you a moment to stretch your legs before the improvisation kicks off.
