Christmas film music from Hollywood scores played live by London Concertante inside the candlelit Sheffield Cathedral.
Christmas at the Movies by Candlelight comes to Sheffield Cathedral on Friday 11 December, with London Concertante on the strings. It's a Candlelight Concerts production, so the whole thing is played by candlelight inside the cathedral, and the set is built around Christmas cinema favourites.
The programme runs from the golden age of Hollywood through to more recent classics. You'll hear John Williams' Home Alone, Alan Silvestri's The Polar Express, John Debney's Elf and Craig Armstrong's Love Actually. Alongside those are Irving Berlin's White Christmas—often called the best-selling single of all time—and Dimitri Tiomkin's It's a Wonderful Life. It's a mix of the big, brassy sounds of the old studio era and the more modern scores we've grown up with, all played live by the orchestra.
London Concertante is the ensemble taking it through, and the performance runs for an hour and fifteen minutes. It's open to audiences of all ages, so it works as a family outing as much as a night out on your own. The music is the focus here, with the orchestral arrangements doing the heavy lifting rather than any screen projections.
