Evening celebrating a decade and a half of Northern publishing by And Other Stories, with poet Colin Bramwell, short story writer Karishma Jobanputra and a DJ.
And Other Stories are celebrating fifteen years of publishing at the Millennium Gallery on Thursday 22 October, from 7pm to 10pm. It's a Sheffield house that puts the city at the centre of a global exchange of writing, and this evening marks a decade and a half of that work. The celebration is part of Off the Shelf, the University of Sheffield's festival of words.
On the bill are poet Colin Bramwell and short story writer Karishma Jobanputra, with a DJ on the decks. It's a night for reading and listening, and it's worth knowing the context of the publisher behind it. And Other Stories was recently named Small Press of the Year at the British Book Awards, and they're the first publisher to have two books consecutively win the International Booker Prize, the premier award for literature in translation. That's a fair bit of weight for a small press, and a good reason to mark the milestone.
The evening takes place in the Millennium Gallery, which houses the Sykes Gallery Metalwork Collection — one of the finest in the world, with over 800 examples of the cutlery and tableware that made Sheffield famous — and the Guild of St George's Ruskin Collection. It's a big space for a literary night, and the celebration fills it.
