Free display recreating the historic Burton family butcher shop of Attercliffe and Carbrook, inside the 'Sheffield Life & Times' gallery at Weston Park Museum.
Burton's Butcher's Shop is a continuing display at Weston Park Museum, where it's held inside the 'Sheffield Life & Times' gallery. It's a recreation of the Burton family shop, which served the people of Attercliffe and Carbrook for almost a century in an area that was once a major centre for steelmaking, before it finally closed in 1985. It's become a visitor favourite here.
The museum itself has a long history. It opened in 1875 in Weston House, and the grounds later became the park. A neoclassical Ionic extension followed in 1887, and the Mappin Art Gallery was built to house the collection left by the Rotherham businessman John Newton Mappin. A purpose-built structure replaced the demolished Weston Hall and opened in 1937; for most of its history, the museum was known as the Sheffield City Museum and Mappin Art Gallery. The Blitz hit the Mappin Art Gallery in December 1940, destroying much of the building. Today, the museum also houses one of the country's longest-serving weather stations, which has been recording Sheffield's weather since 1882.
