Continuing archaeology exhibition at Weston Park Museum with more than 500 objects spanning 50,000 years of Sheffield's history, plus a replica Iron Age roundhouse.
Beneath Your Feet is a continuing display in the archaeology gallery at Weston Park Museum, and it's one of those things you can just drop into whenever you're around the museum. The whole point is to dig through 50,000 years of Sheffield's history, and it does exactly that: more than 500 objects run from the Palaeolithic and the Bronze Age through to Anglo-Saxon and Medieval times. You'll find fearsome weapons and hidden Roman treasure, with films and interactives to help piece it all together.
A good chunk of the collection is credited to Thomas Bateman, the Derbyshire-born archaeologist, and the display turns the spotlight on the man behind the finds. There are archaeology books, University of Sheffield excavation videos, and a look into his personal and professional history, so you get a sense of how these things were actually dug up. If you're taking younger visitors, there's a replica Iron Age roundhouse with a real thatched roof to explore, and dressing-up costumes they can try on.
The museum itself opened in 1875 and is home to a couple of local favourites: Spike the Woolly Rhino and Snowy the Polar Bear, so if you've got time to wander beyond the archaeology gallery, they're worth a look. Entry is free, with a suggested donation of £5.
