Concert by the British folk-pop duo Belinda O'Hooley and Jackie Oates at the Upper Chapel in Sheffield.
Belinda O’Hooley and Jackie Oates are playing together at Upper Chapel on Friday 16 October. It's a double bill of two singers who both work in folk, though they come at it from different angles: O’Hooley with her distinct, low-register voice and a penchant for the slightly off-beat, and Oates with her clear, traditional singing and her fiddle. When they share a stage, the two voices sit well together, and the set draws on the folk traditions they both know inside out.
O’Hooley has built her name on a mix of traditional songs and her own writing, often with a wry, observant streak that keeps things from feeling too precious. Oates is equally at home with the old songs, and she brings the fiddle into the mix as well as her singing. Together they cover a fair bit of ground, from the traditional material they both draw on to the newer songs they've written along the way. It's a night of two singers who know how to hold a room with just their voices and a few instruments between them.
