Piano recital by Tim Horton of Beethoven's 'Appassionata' sonata, opening his cycle of the complete Beethoven piano sonatas.
Tim Horton is at the Crucible Theatre on Saturday 5 December, performing a concert for Music in the Round that journeys through Beethoven's piano works, with the Appassionata sonata taking centre stage. It's the opening of a marathon project for Horton: he's planning to perform the complete Beethoven piano sonata cycle, and this is where he starts.
Horton is one of the UK's leading pianists, and he's got the credits to back it up. He gave his debut solo recital at Wigmore Hall in 2016 and appears there frequently, is a founding member of Ensemble 360 and the Leonore Piano Trio, and is regularly broadcast by BBC Radio 3. This is a solo turn, so it's just him and the piano.
The Appassionata itself has a bit of a story. It only got its nickname after Beethoven's death, an invention of a Hamburg publisher; the work was mostly sketched in 1805, finished the following year, and first published in 1807. Its manuscript is now in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, and it came from the family of the French pianist Marie Bigot, to whom Beethoven gave it after she sight-read it for him. The pages still bear water stains from the rain that soaked the manuscript on his journey back to Vienna.
