BABEZ 'n BREAKS lands at Plot 22 on Saturday 20 November, an all-female lineup of jungle, tekno, hardcore, bassline and breakbeat DJs and producers. The bill puts BETSY MAE, Grace Wolfe, Dankgrrrl, Ebz b2b Els and Maypleef on the same night, so it's a fair bit of ground to cover across one evening. If you're into the faster, break-heavy end of things, that's the whole of it in one go.
Plot 22 is Sheffield's underground hub and the city's only phone-free club, a DIY grassroots venue that books local talent and offers studio, equipment and venue hire alongside its own club nights. Among those are the 'LOCAL' series and the 'RiteTrax Open Decks' open-decks series, so it's a place that keeps a good eye on what's coming up in the city. The phone-free policy is the one thing that really sets it apart from most other spots around here, and it's a nice reminder of what a night out is supposed to be about.
With five names on the bill, the night should move through a few different moods. You've got the jungle and tekno side of things, the harder edges of hardcore, the weight of bassline, and the breakbeat that ties it all together. Ebz and Els are playing back-to-back, so that's two sets in one, and the rest of the lineup fills out the rest of the night. It's a broad spread of sounds, all from the same family of break-driven dance music, and all from female DJs and producers.
