Permanent gallery with more than 300 objects on pharaohs, pyramids, mummies and myths, with a 'build a pyramid' interactive for children.
Ancient Egypt is a continuing display at Weston Park Museum, which opened its doors on 15 February 2020. It's not a temporary exhibition, so it's there whenever you fancy a wander through the gallery rather than something you have to rush to see before a closing date.
The gallery takes you from pharaohs and pyramids to mummies and myths, bringing the afterlife of one of history's most fascinating civilisations to life through more than 300 objects. Among the highlights are two ornate coffins containing the mummies of Nesitanebetasheru and Djedma'atiuesank, a limestone 'listening ear' used by its owner to talk to the gods, a copper and ivory dagger dating from 1950-1550 BC, and a book of delicate embroidered and woven textile fragments. The displays also look at how these objects came to the city and the approach to collecting material from other countries and cultures at the time.
If you're bringing the youngest ones along, there's a 'build a pyramid' interactive, some dressing up, and a story corner to keep them occupied. The gallery was made possible by a £187,000 DCMS/Wolfson Museums and Galleries Improvement Fund grant, alongside support from the Earl Fitzwilliam Trust, the Foyle Foundation, the JG Graves Charitable Trust, the Charles Hayward Foundation, Sheffield Town Trust, the Sheffield Museum Friends, and museum visitors.
