Acoustic guitar evening with Will McNicol, the Scottish guitarist named Guitarist Magazine's UK Acoustic Guitarist of the Year in 2011.
Will McNicol plays Cafe No9 on Sunday 22 November, with the music starting at 7:00pm. It's a solo acoustic guitar night, and McNicol is the only name on the bill.
He's one of the UK's most respected contemporary acoustic guitarists, and the background to that is worth a bit of space. Born in Scotland and now living in the South of England, he picked up his first guitar as a young child and holds Associate, Licentiate and Fellowship diplomas with Trinity College London in Classical Guitar Recital. That classical training sits right at the heart of what he does, even when he's playing far outside the classical repertoire.
His style blends modern fingerstyle with a classical sensitivity to tone and phrasing, and he's known for combining acoustic tapping and slapping with a more conventional approach to build cinematic, narrative pieces. It's a way of playing that lets him get a lot of sound and movement out of a single guitar. He's released several critically acclaimed albums of original music and has supported artists like Antonio Forcione, Pierre Bensusan, Clive Carroll, Jon Gomm, Martin Simpson and Mumford & Sons.

The industry has taken notice too: he was named Guitarist Magazine's UK Acoustic Guitarist of the Year in 2011, featured in Acoustic Guitar Magazine's 30 Great Guitarists Under 30 in 2014, and described by Guitar World in 2021 as one of the best acoustic players on the planet. Tickets are £16.50, which includes the booking fee, and the night kicks off at 7:00pm at Cafe No9.
