Live music evening by Urubu, a trio blending Latin American, jazz and folk music, with vocalist Sally Doherty, pianist Paul Kilvington and double bassist Graham Jones.
Urubu play Cafe No9 on Sunday 13 December, a trio built around Latin American music. The evening is fronted by vocalist Sally Doherty, with pianist Paul Kilvington and double bassist Graham Jones. They sing in the original Portuguese and Spanish, blending Latin, jazz and folk.
Urubu describes itself as a collective of musicians bound by a shared love of Latin American music, and that's a good starting point for where the night goes. The repertoire is sung in Portuguese and Spanish, so you'll hear the songs in their original languages rather than translated. It's a mix of Latin, jazz and folk, and critics have pointed to Doherty's intonation and her command of the three languages.
There's a fair bit of ground covered by the three of them. Sally Doherty has released 12 self-penned albums across folk, jazz and Latin, and her career has taken her on collaborative journeys through Europe, America, Australia and Scandinavia. She's performed live on MTV, BBC Radio 1 and RAI 1, and written for BBC TV, BBC Radio 4 Drama and short films. Paul Kilvington was the creator and musical director of the Latin jazz outfit Amazonia, which played UK jazz festivals in the 1990s. Graham Jones rounds out the trio, with projects ranging from jazz and country to bluegrass, cajun and texmex, and credits that include the Royal Albert Hall and Jools Holland's show.
