Alt-folk singer-songwriter Sam Brookes plays a trio show at Cafe No9, the first of two back-to-back shows.
Sam Brookes is playing Cafe No9 on Friday 20 November, the first of two back-to-back shows that run into Saturday 21 November. It's a trio show, so he'll be on stage with two other musicians rather than solo.
Brookes is an alt-folk singer-songwriter with a clear, soaring voice and a way of writing songs that lean on narrative. Folk Radio has called him a 'national treasure', and The Independent has drawn comparisons to Tim Buckley. He's been at this since he was sixteen, writing and performing while training as a gilder in his late father's workshop, and his sound takes its cues from the British and American folk revivalists of the sixties.
His 2020 album Black Feathers was produced by Grammy nominee Dom Monks and featured a wide cast of musicians, including Ethan Johns, Neil Cowley, Nick Pini, Daisy Palmer, Sam Sweeney and Rob Pemberton. The title track landed in The Day of the Jackal, the Sky series starring Eddie Redmayne. Before that, his 2014 album Kairos was named by The Independent as one of the stand-out records of the year. He's also released music as Supalung, a collaboration with artist and producer Pete Josef.
