Bluegrass duo Mountain Song, with tight harmony singing and Appalachian-style guitar work, play Cafe No9.
Mountain Song play Cafe No9 on Wednesday 9 December, with the music starting at 7:30pm. It's a duo — Will Greenway and James Hickman — and they're bringing a hard-driving bluegrass sound to the Sheffield stage.
They describe themselves as a bluegrass duo that brings the sound of the genre's golden era back to the stage, built on tight harmony singing and masterful guitar work rooted in the early Appalachian tradition. It's bluegrass played with grit, wit and real bite, and they keep it historically accurate. Critics have called it 'high lonesome harmonies from the heart of the hills' and 'the real thing! Voltage, golden era Bluegrass delivered with expertise, panache and authenticity'.
If you're not entirely sure what that means in practice, it's the sound of the early days of the genre: high, tight harmonies and fast, clean guitar work. The 'high lonesome' part refers to that particular vocal style — singing high and with a certain strained, yearning quality — that's a hallmark of old-school bluegrass. Between the two of them, Greenway and Hickman cover the singing and the guitar, and they lean into the Appalachian roots rather than polishing it down for a modern audience.
