Acoustic roots duo Mambo Jambo, a double act of Pete Jack and Frankie Banham, play a pre-Christmas party of roots, jazz and world music in a small room.
Mambo Jambo play Cafe No9 on Thursday 3 December, bringing their acoustic roots sound to Sheffield for a pre-Christmas night. The duo is made up of Pete Jack and Frankie Banham, a Hull-based act whose influences run from Latin America and Africa to the Caribbean, bluegrass, boogie and rumba. Over the last ten years they've built a large and varied repertoire and played festivals across Britain, and they describe their shows as 'a whistle-stop tour of the musical world'.
They call themselves 'Musical Explorers', and the set lives up to the name: a mix of their own compositions and upbeat mash-ups of roots, jazz, world and folk. The instruments they bring on stage are a good part of the draw. Pete Jack handles guitar, banjo, vocals, accordion, Cuban tres and ukulele; Frankie Banham adds sax, vocals, clarinet and flute. On top of that, they use a wide range of percussion, including a suitcase and spoons. Their tour bus is said to be packed to the brim with instruments, and you'll hear a fair few of them in one night.
