Folk singer-songwriters Mallory Chipman and Lily Monaghan play a double bill of original songs to mark the Winter Solstice.
Mallory Chipman and Lily Monaghan play Cafe No9 on Friday 18 December, a double bill of folk singer-songwriters from the Canadian prairies. They're touring the UK and Ireland together, and this date falls just before the Winter Solstice, which is the theme they've built the evening around: a mix of their own original songs woven in with a few carefully chosen pieces to mark the shortest day of the year.
Chipman is the more established of the two, described as a musical polymath — an award-winning musician, songwriter, producer and music scholar known for an acrobatic voice. Her 2024 album, Songs to a Wild God, hit number one on CKUA and number five on the Folk International Charts, and she was a 2026 nominee for Solo Artist of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Monaghan, born and raised in Alberta, works across folk, pop and country, and is noted for a warm, unique tone and a hypnotising presence. Her debut EP, Introspection, came out in February 2023, and she's played Celtic Connections, Edmonton Folk Fest, Winnipeg Folk Fest and JUNOfest.
Both come from western Canada, and the double bill brings them together on one stage rather than as separate acts. The set combines their original material with those selected pieces, all tied to the Winter Solstice. It's a stop on their wider tour of the UK and Ireland, so they'll be playing this same bill in other cities around the country.
