Guided walking tour of downtown Seattle tracing the city's architecture from the 1889 fire to today, starting outside the Mutual Life Building.
From Stone to Steel: Seattle Style from Then 'til Now is a downtown walking tour run by the Seattle Architecture Foundation, starting at the Mutual Life Building on Saturday, December 5. It's a two-hour walk that traces the city's built environment from 1889 to the present day.
The tour begins with Seattle's rebirth after the Great Fire of 1889 and works decade by decade through the design runway, taking in the architectural trends of each era. You'll see the chunky, monumental Romanesque of the early years, the stark and unadorned Brutalism that followed, and the environmentally conscious, sleek glass and steel towers of high-tech, computer-aided design. It's a way to see how the city's skyline grew from the ground up, one style at a time.
Registration is strongly encouraged in advance, and sales close at 9:00 AM on the morning of the tour. A minimum of three registered attendees is required for it to go ahead. The walk starts outside the Mutual Life Building at 605 1st Ave, at 1st and Yesler.
