Architecture tour examining urban revitalisation and design strategies in the South Lake Union neighbourhood, tracing its commercial growth and architectural evolution.
South Lake Union: Then & Now is an architecture tour run by the Seattle Architecture Foundation on Saturday, November 21, 2026. It starts at Triangle Park across from Whole Foods — 2211 Westlake Avenue N, at the intersection of Westlake, Denny, and 9th — and ends at Lake Union Park, 860 Terry Avenue N.
The tour looks at the ingredients of urban revitalization and the design strategies shaping the South Lake Union neighborhood. It traces the area's commercial growth from Amazon's historic lease agreement to the current expansion of residential and hospitality development, and takes in Amazon's SLU Campus, South Lake Union Park, UW Medicine, and the new Google and Facebook SLU Campuses. From the Denny Triangle to the shoreline of the 'Little Lake,' it shares the neighborhood's history and guides you past commercial and institutional projects that show how design has adapted over the last 15 years.
It's a good way to get a sense of how this part of the city has changed so quickly. You'll see the corporate campuses that have come to define the area, but also the residential and hospitality projects that have filled in around them. The route takes you from the Denny Triangle down to the water, so you get to see the neighborhood as a whole rather than just a few blocks.
