Concert by the psychobilly band The Meteors at Soda Bar, known for their high-energy performances and the 'wrecking' dance style.
The Meteors play Soda Bar on Monday, November 30, their only San Diego date that month. They're the psychobilly band that invented the genre, forged in England in 1980 out of rockabilly played too fast and horror movies watched too often. P. Paul Fenech started it all on guitar and vocals, with Nigel Lewis on upright bass and Mark Robertson on drums; they played their first show at The Sparrow Hawk in north London. Fenech is the only original member still in the band, now playing with Mark Burnett on bass and Wolfgang Hordemann on drums.
Their fans, known as 'the Crazies', invented a dance style called 'going mental', later renamed 'wrecking', which remains a staple of the psychobilly scene. Fenech's ritual of spitting blood during performances led many clubs to refuse to book them, and the band has long insisted that their shows be a 'politics and religion free zone'—a rule that helped build one of music's most stubbornly self-contained scenes.
They made a film in late 1980 called Meteor Madness, signed to Island Records in August 1981 and recorded their first album, In Heaven. They've since released 17 official albums, recording in their own In Heaven studio. The set at Soda Bar will be just them, no other acts on the bill.
