The Damned, punk rock pioneers from the 1970s, perform live at House of Blues San Diego.
The Damned play House of Blues San Diego on Friday, November 13, with The Courettes opening. It's a punk rock bill in the Gaslamp, and the headliner is one of the oldest names still touring from the first wave of British punk.
They formed in London in 1976, and they've put out 11 studio albums and a handful of UK chart singles since then. Over the decades, they've built a global following around their live shows, which have always been the core of what they do. The dark lyrics and David Vanian's rich baritone vocals eventually pushed them to the front of the goth-rock scene, a sound that set them apart from the more straightforward punk of their peers.
The lineup on stage is David Vanian on vocals, Captain Sensible on guitar, Paul Gray on bass, Monty Oxy Moron on keyboards, and Rat Scabies on drums. That's a lot of history in one band—Vanian and Scabies go back to the very beginning, and Captain Sensible was there for the early years before leaving and eventually returning. The keyboards add a layer that doesn't always show up in a standard punk set, and it's a big part of the goth-rock sound they're known for.
