The 14th year of San Diego Zine Fest celebrating DIY culture with over 100 vendors, food and drink stalls, and live screen printing.
San Diego Zine Fest returns to The WOO in Barrio Logan this weekend, October 17 and 18, marking its 14th year. It's one of the city's longest-running celebrations of DIY culture, and this edition brings together more than 100 zinesters and vendors from across Southern California and Baja California. The fest describes itself as "San Diego's original Zine Fest," and that history shows in the scale of itβover a hundred tables of self-published work, each one a different voice, a different subject, and a different way of putting a book together.
Beyond the zines, there are food and drink stalls to keep you going, and live screen printing happening on site, so you can watch the process as much as you can browse the tables. It's the kind of event where you spend as much time talking to the people who made the work as you do reading it.
Among the participants this year is The Nth Degree Studio, run by Nick and Natalie Patton. They specialize in Risograph art and greeting cards, a printing method that sits somewhere between screen printing and photocopying. Their process is eco-friendly, using soy-based ink and an Energy Star-rated machine, so if you're looking for something that's as mindful of the materials as it is about the art, their table is a good place to start.
