San Diego punk rock institution Rocket From the Crypt performs their famous Halloween show at the House of Blues, with Ceremony and Zeus Apollo as supporting acts.
Rocket From the Crypt play the House of Blues on Saturday, October 24, their annual Halloween show in San Diego. They're sharing the bill with Ceremony and Zeus Apollo.
For those who know the band's history, the night is built around a strange bit of luck. The show supports Scream, Frankenstein, Scream!, a vinyl-only album pieced together from 1995 master tapes that turned up on OfferUp. Those tapes were restored to the sound of the original sessions, so this is a record that was lost for thirty years and only exists now because someone happened to find it on a secondhand marketplace.
It's a fitting way for a San Diego punk institution to keep adding to its catalog. Rocket From the Crypt formed in the summer of 1990 when singer and guitarist John Reis left the hardcore band Pitchfork and teamed up with bassist Petey X and guitarist N.D. Their 1991 debut Paint As A Fragrance led to the independent success of Circa: Now! in 1992, which sparked a major-label bidding war that landed them an Interscope contract. The single "Ditch Digger" ended up on MTV's Buzz Bin. Trumpeter JC 2000 joined in 1994, and that year's Scream, Dracula, Scream! brought their biggest overseas success, with "On a Rope" peaking at No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart. The band split in 2005, reunited in 2011 and fully in 2013, and they've always had a thing for their most dedicated fans: they're known for letting people with RFTC tattoos in for free. Frontman John Reis, now 61, also founded Swami Records in 1999 and fronted Drive Like Jehu.
